About Carrie
I was interested in sewing from a young age and apparently it's in my blood. I knew that my great-grandmother was a singer on Vaudeville with her sisters, The Kashner Sisters. It was just recently that I discovered that her mother was the theater seamstress and made all of the costumes and did any needed mending! In fact my grandmother still has her grandmother’s sewing machine and it works! My grandmother is also a seamstress and made the quilt I had on my bed in my early childhood and I took that same quilt with me to college. My mom made clothes and other things for me as a child and taught me the basics of sewing on a sewing machine, and I learned to sew on buttons when I worked at a dry cleaners in high school. From that knowledge, I’ve built my skills, and self-taught to where I am today through friends, books, online tutorials, and You Tube! The first thing I remember successfully sewing was a skirt made out of ties in high school. I collected ties from anywhere I could, including soliciting help from the owner of the dry cleaners I mentioned before. (Lots of people never pick up their clothes from the cleaners!) This skirt was the beginning of seeing the possibilities for reusing ties. This business journey started with Tied by Carrie. I created things out of neck ties, and I still do. The ties led to clergy stoles when I made a stole for my husband using his grandfather’s ties. The clergy stoles are probably my favorite thing to make! It’s like worship and brings me a lot of joy. They are all custom made and start with a sketch that becomes realized in fabric. Since I love making one of a kind items, I also love making costumes and dresses. This journey is always evolving, and I love trying new things, so you never know what might be Created by Carrie next.
